![]() It was never a particularly large group – at its height in mid-1936 it had approximately 125,000 members nationwide – but because so many of its leading figures were wealthy it had little problem getting its message out. ![]() In August 1934, a bipartisan group of businessmen and political leaders formed an organization called the American Liberty League, dedicated to fighting what it believed to be the radicalism of the New Deal. It is worth remembering that there was little ideological cohesion in either of the major parties – both had members ranging from the very conservative to the very liberal. ![]() ![]() The unprecedented nature of the New Deal guaranteed that it would generate a great deal of opposition among conservatives, including those within the Democratic Party.
